UGHH! Participial Clauses


To avoid wordiness, two sentences with a repeated noun can be merged (joined) into one sentence. One sentence is changed to a relative clause (adjective clause) that modifies the repeated noun in the other sentence.


The Golden Gate Bridge is located at the entrance to San Francisco Bay.
The bridge was designed by Joseph Strauss.

(The bridge repeats the proper noun Golden Gate Bridge.)

The Golden Gate Bridge, which is located at the entrance to San Francisco Bay, was designed by Joseph Strauss.
